The end of the Maya - and the 5 senses continued

Our last week on the Maya was a very short week. I anticipated having through Thursday but Wednesday ended up being our last day -and I think we didn't do a lot on that day seeing my parents were in town.

In any case, here is what we did to finish up with the Maya.

We read a very interesting book on the history of one of the major Mayan cities, Tikal.

We learned about Maya gods and goddesses and the Resplendent Quetzal, which is a tropical bird in Guatemala. Then we did some sand art to color our Quetzal print outs.

We watched The Testaments which is a video made by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Although I suppose there isn't any proof that the preclassic Maya were the Lamanites and Nephites, there is overwhelming evidence to make an extremely strong case for that. This video shows the life of a fictional Nephite during the time time of Christ's crucifixion and resurrection and then visit to the Nephites in America. The Church based the Nephite culture in this movie on the Maya and so when you watch the movie there are a lot of culturally accurate Maya aspects to it. Besides that, it is also a beautiful testimony of Jesus Christ and His Atonement for all mankind.

Our study of the Maya got me really interested in the idea that the Nephites and Lamanites were indeed the early Maya. My uncle was an anthropologist? archeologist? studier of ancient Mesoamerica and I asked for book recommendations. He recommended this one.

All 815 pages of it. I'm almost done. It's fascinating. His theory is that the Olmec people are the Jaredites and they were still around for about 300 years or so after Lehi arrived with his family. So for a while the Jaredites and Nephites/Lamanites lived together and the cultures mixed a bit. Then... I'm not going to go into all the details, but geographically, culturally, archeologically, linguistically, and from the information in the Book of Mormon, everything matches. This book is over 800 pages of everything matching. I'm almost done. Only this much left to go.

For the last senses, touch, taste, and smell, we really only had time to read a few books. I had a big lab planned with 10 stations, 2 for each sense, and a worksheet and everything but my goal was not to stress out unduly before our 2 week vacation so the lab had to go. We've done something like that before anyway and it was almost more for fun, since I'm pretty sure Abigail and Joshua have a strong understanding of their five senses and the importance of them.
