Pioneer Day(s): Day 3 - The Grand Parade

Nathan and his family set a blanket up for us on the parade route, and we got there just in time for the actual parade to start, but missed Derek's favorite part - all the military vehicles and the old cannon. He would have missed it anyway. International Companies - even those based in Utah - don't take Pioneer Day off. Here are some of our favorite floats/things in the parade.

Why do I put pictures of myself like that on the internet? We were in a hurry to leave this morning, and apparently in my haste I forgot to get ready. Or lose 10 lbs. That's probably a more likely story. I promise I look (a little) better in person.

I really  liked the marching bands and a lot of the other floats too. I didn't get a photo of the Sonic Roller skaters. They were doing tricks and dancing. We got a kick out of that. And then they had these jeeps with some weird flex suspension something that could drive onto each other. I just can't explain it, but it was also awesome. (Last year I took so many photos and ended up deleting a bunch, so this year I thought I would be smart and only photograph a few things, which turned out to be too few apparently. Next year, maybe, I get it just right.)

Happy Pioneer Day!

Pioneer Day(s): Day 2 - The BBQ

Pioneer Day fell on a Sunday this year. At church I was a little disappointed that we didn't have more talks on the Pioneers, however the hymns that we sang were very fitting and I reflected a lot on what the pioneers did and who they were. What an amazing story. They are our latter-day Israelites on a latter-day Exodus. It took me a long time to realize how awesome pioneers were - and then even longer to realize that I have a rich family history of pioneers. I am very proud of that.

After church we drove up to Midway for a BBQ with Derek's aunt, uncle, and two cousins from Switzerland! They had just gotten in to SLC that morning, rushed off to church, and arrived in Midway just before we got there! It was tons of fun to see Mark, Liz, Sascha, and Remy again. Sascha we see every year (if we're lucky, He's usually off playing with his friends in PG) but we hadn't seen Mark, Liz, and Remy for 2 years. Tonja and Yuri couldn't make it. Maybe next time.

Poor Remy! Joshua and Maren wore him out, whether by roaring at him like a dinosaur or just chasing him (endlessly) around the house. I hope he still comes back next year.

Just woke up

Pioneer Day(s): Day 1 - Kinderparade

I love Spanish Fork. Here is another reason why.

These are people from our old ward. My good friend was in charge of the float this year (again - she was less than happy about that) and so she invited us out to enjoy all the fun. It was fun.

Happy Birthday

Joshua turned 4 during our vacation (see vacation post about 3 down).  I will skip the reminiscing of his birth and jump as quickly as I can to the cake part, because that's all the kids really care about anyway. However, I will say that today, the 16th, but 4 years ago obviously, was his due date. Thank heavens for early babies!!

We had a small birthday celebration with cake and presents at my parent's house on the island the day before, because on his actual birthday we were in the van traveling. Exhausted, uncomfortable, miserable. Well, that's how Joshua made it seem. He has been going through a really hard time and it has taken me a while to figure out what he needed. But I think I've figured a lot of it out. (I hope!) He needs me to slow down. He needs some special one on one time. And he's 4. He needs to be treated like he's 4. Not like he's 2.

Anyway, since his actual birthday was quite possibly one of the worst days of his life, I felt I had to make it up to him (he has only been talking about his birthday since February "July?! But I just can't wait until July! I need a birthday now.")

Therefore, we celebrated three times. I know. He's spoiled. None of the celebrations were huge, but I think now he will remember his 4th birthday with fondness for as long as children remember things like that. Here are the photo highlights.

Party One: With Grandma and Grandpa on Lopez Island
My tradition is to get balloons for every birthday - and then get rid of them as quickly afterward as I can.

Joshua received 5 books for his birthday (and yes I am very happy about that) He started calling it his "Ge-books-tag"

Our landlady gave us this cake mix 5 months ago when Joshua just couldn't wait for his birthday. He had been patiently waiting a long long time to finally eat this cake!

And the candle was just an emotional buy :)

Party Two: With friends at North Park in Spanish Fork
Although we don't really eat a lot of cake (especially cake mixes) I had a huge supply of them, so I decided to put another mix to good use.

Sarah, Jane, Ethan, Abigail, Joshua, Nathan, and Hazel. Lukas and Dylan  and the moms didn't make it into the photo.

cupcakes. eat 'em up kids. I don't want to take any home.

three beauties and a baby

I guess since I have so many photos of the kids playing at North Park, I didn't bother to take any photos of any kids actually in the water. This photo is proof that they actually did get wet. Very, very wet. :)

Party Three: With Grammy and Grampy up in Midway
Joshua had requested Grampy make him a crepe breakfast, so we all feasted on crepes with fresh strawberries and whip creme, ham, and the most delicious omelets I have ever eaten.

She's asking for more

Some neighbors gave us this little bike and Derek and his dad did a little number on it to make it rideable. Which means now I have to teach him how to ride a 2 wheeler. I guess that is the treat-him-like-he's-4,-not-2 part.

I think it's still a little big. OK, I'm just really nervous (If I can't handle teaching him to ride a 2 wheeler, how I am ever going to send him to college - or kindergarten!)
Just for fun, here is a photo of when Joshua was 2. You can see why I would want to preserve his innocence and out of control cuteness! Man. I just really love this kid.

test post

Blogger is telling me I have used my "quota" of free storage space when I try to change that photo of me over there on the sidebar. Yesterday, in order to post a gazillion photos of our vacation (2 posts down) I deleted a bunch of earlier posts to make more photo space. However, obviously, as I have successfully posted a bunch of random photos, I do have more photos space. So the question is, how do I change the old profile photo and put in one that isn't 2 years old?

homemade "S" crackers - just sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, and sea salt.
random photo of a one armed baby. Just kidding. Lukas still has two arms.

Breakfast of champions. Almonds, bananas, strawberries, and sunflower seeds.
 Brothers
 Cruisin'

Our Spanish Fork friends. Notice how they are ALL boys... except Abigail. (But my favorite part is that there are two babies missing from this photo, one in a carseat off to the left, and another that technically wasn't born yet - but he is now - and they are both boys TOO! It's in the Spanish Fork water.)
 Happy Father's Day - from Derek's sister.
Joshua holding an Iguana. (The Iguana is dead. Hmmm. I'm not sure if that makes this photo more or less creepy.)
