Pumpkin Carving and Halloween Night

Here are some of my favorite photos from yesterday (carving our pumpkin) and today (Halloween). This was Lukas' first Halloween and I think he enjoyed himself. After he got home and dumped out all his candy (and having eaten probably 10 pieces already) he started spinning in circles and laughing uncontrollably. I tried to get a video but the doorbell rang and he ran to the door to hand out candy. It was hilarious. At least he fell asleep right away. The other kids took a while to come off their sugar highs. At least it's only one night out of the year. Tomorrow we start rationing the candy to make it last until Easter... just kidding.

This is a funny pic because Joshua's spoon handle is in Abigail's face and Abigail's spoon handle is in Lukas' face. It was a little too crowded (and too hot in the sun) so we moved our operation to the front driveway.

Thankfully this jack-o-lantern is still bigger than my belly.

I had them give me their "scary" faces.

The first house - Jennifer across the street. They went trick-or-treating with their Grammy because I knew I couldn't walk that far and Derek is working at the temple every Wednesday night.

All lit up!

The last house! Grammy didn't take them out as long as I would have, but that's probably a good thing. Last year we were out I think 3 hours - oh the loads of candy!!

Lukas was pretty happy with his little load though.

Then for a while the older kids got to hand out candy to trick-or-treaters that stopped by our house

my costume. This isn't a good photo. My big belly is a jack-o-lantern. I got lots of positive feedback.

Out of order photo.

Birthday Week

Last week was my birthday week. I should have kept a better journal of what happened because then this post wouldn't be full of a bunch of holes. Anyway, it was an awesome week and here is what I remember.

Sunday: Sustained and set apart in my new calling. I am the 2nd Counselor in the Relief Society Presidency. I am over the teachers, the music, and the YSA women and the Laurels moving up into RS. Something new for me this time round (years back I was the 2nd counselor in charge of Enrichment - back when it was still called Enrichment) is that the presidency takes care of all the visiting teaching assignments - we have no visiting teacher coordinator to do it all. So that is a lot of work. I'm teaching the Presidency Lesson in Relief Society this upcoming Sunday. Derek was also sustained and set apart to his new calling, which is the assistant ward clerk over finances. This translates to a lot of work, but mostly concentrated on Sundays for 2 or so hours after church. My calling, so far, has translated into a lesson to teach next week, a talk to give the week after, a meal to make for a sister tomorrow, 3 meetings, daily conversations with the President, and I only have Thursdays (except for every third Thursday of the month) as my only day of the week where I am available to do anything. Hmmm.

Also, on Sunday I started reading the first book in the Fablehaven series. I just needed something to read.

Monday: I finished the first book in the Fablehaven series. It was a blustery stormy day outside, but not rainy and not really even cold. I LOVED just sitting and reading a book. Plus Derek worked from home so I could run Joshua to school and back without worrying about the other kids. And the kids didn't fight, I think all day long. It was awesome. That evening was the last presidential debate -and I am so glad because not only do those things make me incredibly nervous, they often make me incredibly angry. But this one was excellent and I think the American people who have eyes to see and ears to hear will be able to see clearly their two choices - if they choose differently than I do, that is of course ok, but I think it is important that we know exactly what we are choosing because we will be held accountable to that. (PS. How in the world is anyone still "undecided,"? Doesn't that seem a little weird? What are these people waiting for? Have they just not thought about the election yet? Come on! It's only a little over a week away!)

Tuesday: My actual birthday. I went to a Dr.'s appointment and everything looks great. The baby was doing exactly what he was supposed to be doing and is exactly the size he is supposed to be. That afternoon I worked on the kids Halloween costumes - which is really fun for me in a way. I made two swords, a pirate eye patch, two tinkerbell shoes, and a Smee cap. I didn't get to the hook. Derek brought home Panda express for dinner and I ate way too much but it was so awesome not to even THINK about making a dinner. Then I had a RS presidency meeting and it was so FUN!! I am by far the youngest in the presidency - which makes sense because I am probably one of the very youngest in our RS, but the other women are so fun and we get a long so well already. It was fun to plan and prepare and discuss, etc.  I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

Wednesday: Can't remember much. But it must have been good. I baked cookies that evening - the pumpkin orange cookies - and they were fantastic.

Thursday: Found a babysitter last minute (Thanks Heidi!!!) and attended a couponing class at Derek's work. I've done couponing before and not much of the information was new, but it was so fun to be in a workplace again (it's been 6 years) and to spend time with Derek without the children. Joshua didn't have school because we had parent teacher conference and that was fun. He is doing exceptionally well in school, is slightly above grade level in reading and writing, and got 3 O's (Outstanding) for "following directions," "getting along with others," and "obeying the rules." In fact, his teacher who is our neighbor joked that sometimes he reminds HER of the rules. That afternoon I baked pumpkin chocolate chip muffins. That evening my in-laws came over and we celebrated my birthday with take out from Costa Vida. The kids were exceptionally well behaved. My inlaws brought me a bunch of tulips to plant - and we would have done so that evening except it had snowed either that day or the day before, I can't remember which. Anyway, it was too cold and too late.  My husband also surprised me with a SUN OVEN!!! Yea!! I've wanted one for a number of years now. It was still being shipped so it wasn't there right then and there, but he informed me it was coming. I also got "Being George Washington" by Glenn Beck. George Washington is one of my favorite people and I've read a good amount about it, but I was excited for this book. So I started it that evening.

Friday: And on Friday I finished it. It was a great book. Friday afternoon the weather was fantastic so the kids and I all played outside. Until I made them work. I raked all (most of) the leaves that were carpeting our backyard and the kids collected 3 boxes full of walnuts to add to the other 6 or 7 full boxes in the garage. For their hard work (and minimal complaining for a 5, 3, and 1 year old) I promised them a trip to the dollar store on Saturday.

Saturday: We ran a bunch of errands which was fun. I bought new blinds at Home Depot (Oh yes, I forgot to mention I totally broke our vertical blinds in our front window Monday night. Yes, they just came crashing down and we've had to avoid that room as much as possible during all dark and slightly dark hours of the day and night so as not to expose ourselves to our neighbors curiosity - in case they are curious). We picked up the Sun Oven. And of course, went to the dollar store. That afternoon was the ward Fall Festival (read as Halloween Party) and the kids dressed up in their costumes. Plus I donned one (sort of) as well. Photos after Halloween. Neither my chili, nor cookies, nor muffins won a prize. And because there was so much food everybody had left overs to take home. And I'm glad people didn't eat all that I had brought because those muffins and cookies are THE BEST... whether anyone else thinks so or not. And now I have some left over. Well, actually, by this afternoon we had eaten them all.

And that is basically how the week went. My house is now picked up, the dishes are done. And I just ate an entire Symphony chocolate bar that I got at the Stake Auxiliary training meeting I just attended. Besides feeling a little over-chocolatey, I'm feeling pretty good. Happy Birthday. I am now 31.

Next major life event: birthing my 4th baby. I'm crossing my fingers (ok, actually I am fervently praying) he is born on Friday, November 16th. I'm going for water breaking around 7:30 pm and a full delivery by midnight. Yes, somewhat specific, but I figure there is no harm in asking.

Pumpkin Patching

I was hoping to wait until we went to Jake's Jack-o-lantern pumpkin patch again, as was planned, but then it snowed and now it is freezing and I'm not sure we are going to make it a second time. *sigh*

So here are our photos from our other pumpkin patch adventures.  The first trip was with a good childhood friend of mine, Candace, who I hadn't seen since her wedding and before that hadn't seen maybe since we were twelve... maybe. We picked out pumpkins and went afterward to her house and painted them.

sun in their eyes

My friend's 5 year old correctly noted there was nothing scary about my pumpkin. That's right. I did that on purpose. I don't like being scared. In fact, although I love Autumn, I really don't see anything positive about Halloween. Therefore I passively rebel. Hand-holding, rainbows, and happy sunshine (other side of pumpkin) is all I'm willing to give.

Our second patch was Jake's, which is my favorite. We went with my friend and her daughter, plus a couple of other friends. It's kind of like our unofficial and unscheduled play group. When either Laura or I want to do something with each other, we just call a few others and see who can show up. It's pretty fun. We bought a pumpkin - a bigger one - and I think we'll carve it on Monday for FHE.

the best "action" shot of him jumping off the bales that I could get.

Lukas disliked the corn box this year about as much as he disliked it last year.

In the hay maze.

Abigail kept getting stuck at the same dead end while Joshua just got practical about things.

Lukas tolerating all the festivities. Near the end, he was actually kind of enjoying himself and protested a little bit when we had to leave.

Joshua, obviously, did not have the same reservations about the corn as Lukas did.

My kids, and I, were so disappointed when we had to leave. But Joshua had to go to kindergarten so that was that. I'm hoping if the weather cooperates enough, we can get back there on Monday or maybe even Tuesday. We'll just have to see.

And while writing this post, I realized that at the pumpkin patches we went to, we never really walked through the fields to find the perfect pumpkin. And I decided this must have been sub-conscientiously on purpose because I already feel like I am permanently carrying around a 15 lb pumpkin in my belly, I don't want to carry on more for any distance longer than I absolutely have to - or for that matter, I don't want to really WALK any farther than I absolutely have to. So there. Maybe next year we will rummage through the fields to find that one perfect pumpkin.

Fall cooking has just begun

Er, I guess it started back with all those squash. Ok, I'll try again.

Fall cooking is in full swing.

Better.

Here are our annual spiced pumpkin roll-out cookies with orange (flavored and colored) glaze. I would like to mention that it is extremely hard to find a roll-out cookie that utilizes pumpkin and that the one I found was terrible so I've modified it. Or changed half of the recipe. You could also say that. In any case, they didn't taste as good to me this year as in years past and I've decided to blame that on the pregnancy tastebuds. My friends still said they were delicious and the kids still really like them.

This is the BEST chili I have ever made. (I wont mention I just started making chili in July and have only done it maybe 4 times.) Yes, it is fantastic. Kidney, Pinto, and Black beans. Red bell peppers, red jalepenos, ground beef. Lots of tomatoes. Just one onion because I only had one on hand. Salt, pepper, cayenne pepper, paprika, coriander seed (I don't know what this is for but another recipe called for it so I figured it belonged in chili) and I think that is it, actually.

AND, because I am awesome like that, I used DRY beans and actually soaked them myself. That is like the hardest part. It was so good that I decided to enter a chili cook off contest in one week.  The one problem, of course, is that nothing was measured, not even the beans, so I hope it tastes as fabulous on the 27th as I remember now.

And if not, we will have a lot of chili to eat up.

Fall Crafts

Here are a couple of Fall crafts that we do, it seems, every year. But they are fun every year... which is why we do them. I'm debating whether or not to try something new - craftwise, I mean - this year. I may or may not be up to it.

Collecting fall leaves and making placemats. I couldn't find my clear contact paper so we used saran wrap and it some ways it was better, in some it was worse. Lukas liked to crinkle up his placemat after every meal as if it was a napkin and take it to the garbage. These didn't last very long. Maybe a week.

Our pumpkin patch. We just used colored paper and markers plus some pipe cleaner for the vine. I thought these were cute and the kids could get as creative as they wanted. For instance, one of Abigail's jack-o-lanterns has a really small face, a belly button, and some blood on it. I guess creative is the better word to use to describe it.

Our ghosts. These I have to make for the kids, but seriously, it takes 10 minutes total, I use old rags, toilet paper, and thread, and the kids spend HOURS playing with them. These ghosts first just haunted, and then they went to church (sacrament meeting to be more specific) and then they ascended to heaven. They came back down and drove around on the Autobahn, and finally they went trick or treating. It was nap time so I had to tell them to put the ghosts away, otherwise they would have kept playing with them.  I made their three first, and then the four to hang on our window.

The haunted pumpkin patch.
