Spencer's Spit

Spencer's Spit is more on the northern side of the island. (A funny note, the island is really not very big at all, but the village is up on the northern end, as well as the ferry dock. More people live on that side. Center street runs, appropriately, down the center of the island. For April Fool's Day someone set up a pretend border crossing station at the southern end of center street. There were gates and a booth and everything. Going north the signs read, "get your passport ready, entering civilization, put on your tie."  And going south the signs say, "just when you thought it couldn't get any weirder, put on your tie dye."  I thought it was really funny, because there really isn't any difference between the north and south and I felt like it kind of just accentuated that they are all the same, but my parents didn't think it was very funny. (maybe because they live in the south. Neither of them own any tie dye.)

Anyway, Spencer's Spit. This is a county park (or state park?) It was given to the county/state by private owners. The spit is natural. There is a little hut near the end of the spit that is the same dimensions as a little guest home the owner's used to have and then there are some photos of what is left of the owner's house. The house was much bigger, but this is all that is left. It was a lot of fun.

It was a little cloudy and windy when we got there but the sun did come out and it was warm and pleasant. We a plane land at the neighboring island and then take off again. We saw a weird motor boat pass between the spit and the tiny island at the end of the spit. And we saw the ferries heading back from Lopez to Anacortes. Everything but cars. And trains, I guess.

Years back there was a beer commercial making fun of "northwest beaches." Every time I see a scene like this - or with more rain and wind - it makes me laugh and think about that commercial.  I found a link to the commercial, which unfortunately is a lot funnier in my memory, but still, it's kind of funny because it's kind of true. We were so lucky to have really great weather.  Here's the commercial.

There is a mangy bald eagle sitting up in that tree. He mostly looks like a ball of ratty feathers, but he's there.

  2. I grew up a few hours south. It wasn't on an island, but it did have lots of bays and water front, so we went kayaking and boating every summer, and running through the woods.
