Yea!!!
Lukas Elijah (we'll be calling him Lukas)

9 lbs 1 oz 20 in
First, the cute photos...
Next, the NICU photos. He was only in for about 36 hours. At first he needed a little (very little) help breathing, and then help stabilizing his blood sugars. But overall, he was very healthy and doing very well. He had an IV in his head, a feeding tube down his nose, and during only the first hour, that thing you see in the last photo helping him keep air in his lungs.
And finally, this isn't Lukas. This is Joshua. I just thought it would be fun to compare. These photos are from the day we brought Joshua home from the hospital.
Here's the story of Lukas' birth.
My water broke at 4:30 am but since there was only pain and no "water" I wasn't sure exactly what had happened. 15 minutes later after a very hard contraction I woke Derek up, the water came, and we got everything into the car and went to the hospital. We got there around 5:30 ish. I was in tons of pain (I tried so hard to relax everything through the contractions and focus, but I obviously wasn't very good at it, despite my efforts. I suppose I could have done worse). Labor and Delivery was full so we got sent to a triage room, another woman in labor right behind us went to the next triage room. I was dilated to a 7 so the nurses started running around in a panic trying to get some help. The epidural was a fabulous help - I'm glad they found it! Then an operating room opened up so they moved us in there, you know, to make more space in the triage area for the rest of the laboring women coming in, our hospital has been on baby overload the last few weeks. But less than a minute after being in the OR we got to move into a real labor and delivery room, which was much much better. After the epidural labor slowed way down. 3 hours later I was ready to push (actually I was ready to push as soon as I got to the hospital.) Pushing took longer than anticipated, but when he came out we realized why. Nine pounds is not an easy feat. And I was really tired. They took him to the NICU, but there was no room down in Mother Baby so I had to wait in the labor and delivery room for a while. Eventually something opened up. Every three hours I went up to Lukas to nurse him. He made steady improvement, was taken off formula (just to keep his sugar up) and then he finally got to spend the last night with me. Very nice. Now we're home, he's sleeping, Derek is falling asleep reading his scriptures, and I'm going to hit "publish post" and go take a nap.
Yay! I'm glad everything went (relatively) okay!! He looks beautiful! Congrats! We can't wait to meet him. Let me know if you need anything!!!
ReplyDeleteLove,
Becca
YAY! Congratulations, crazy that it was so crowded, but glad to hear you got a room! And you are already home. When you get up from your nap send me an email to let me know what day you don't have a dinner coming, I will take that day!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see him, I think he looks just like Joshua as a baby!
What hospital was this? That's crazy that they were so busy. Lukas is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteWhat is it with hospitals not having enough birthing rooms? I didn't get one either.
ReplyDeleteOh, and he looks just like Joshua! What a cute baby!
ReplyDeleteWeird.I was just at UVRMC. They said the last 3 weeks or so have been crazy like that. Last night i asked how busy it was and my nurse said at that moment there were 16 women in labor.
ReplyDeletewow you must have a baby mold in that belly, they all come out the same! so sweet! So loveable! love his little name!
ReplyDeleteWow, they do look alike! My birthday is Feb 10th, too, so I'm excited to share a birthday with little Lucas:) :)
ReplyDeletewhat a cute little chubster. Congrats! I can't wait to meet him in person.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations!!! I am so excited for your family!!:) What a lucky littel boy to have you as a mom and such a wonderful family!!!! Yahoo!!! Sending lots of love!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations!!! I am so glad you got your VBAC! That is awesome. And now you have a sweet baby to snuggle and kiss and breathe. - Do you breathe your babies? I just love how mine smell.
ReplyDeleteIs anyone organizing meals for you?
yeah, i was very VERY glad about the VBAC. The doc said the situation couldn't have been better. And yes, we are all set up with meals. Thanks.
ReplyDeletefinally got up the energy to look up the blogs I follow. CONGRATS!!!! I am so excited you got the birth you wanted and you did it on your own!! That is amazing! What a big boy you have there. Imagin is 2 weeks old and still has not hit 7 pounds yet! Isabella ended up in the NICU when she was born and it's never fun to have to see your baby with tubes coming in and out. So glad it was not very long (Isabella was in there 7 days) and you were able to still nurse him. I hope you are recovering ok. Can't wait to touch base with you soon. Love ya!!
ReplyDeleteWow Anna, I had no idea that little Lukas had a little drama after he was born. Ethan had to have an IV in his head after he was born and it just about killed me to see him like that. So glad that everything is great now and what a cute little family you have. Have I used the word little enough? Congratulations!
ReplyDeleteNevermind about the invite, I guess I had the wrong address! He is soo cute and I am soo happy for you all! I thought you were having a scheduled c-section but glad you didn't have to! xoxo
